Healthy living

The text in this section was created by freely translating parts of the Forever Healthy Knowledge Base, which is a kind of open-source project of the Forever Healthy Foundation. The knowledge there is shared free of charge, and anyone can contribute.

The Forever Healthy Knowledge Base explains what we can already do today to increase our chances of staying healthy for as long as possible.

In addition to the basics such as nutrition, exercise, sleep and mental well-being, it also describes advanced measures. Under Rejuvenation Now, current rejuvenation therapies are also analyzed in detail, which, among other things, is meant to help doctors working in this field.

Now that we have a good chance that medicine will be developed in the near future that lets us live healthy lives for much longer, it can be far more worthwhile to keep your body as healthy as possible. Even though current measures alone can extend healthy lifespan by a few years at most, those few years could be exactly the years in which future medicine comes onto the market that then greatly extends healthy lifespan. With an unhealthy lifestyle, we could therefore just barely miss out on the possibilities of future medicine.

Read our article here on why a healthy lifestyle is nevertheless not enough to avoid aging or to "age healthily".

Nutrition

There are many different nutrition tips, or rather many different opinions on what a healthy diet is. To us, the most logical approach is to give evolution decisive consideration when choosing our food. Over more than 2.5 million years, evolution has optimized the way our bodies function, and it did so with the food that was available during that time. Modern agriculture has existed for less than 10,000 years. From an evolutionary point of view, this is a very short time, in which our bodies have not yet been able to adapt to agricultural products such as sugar, grains, legumes and dairy products.

By applying the latest knowledge in evolutionary nutrition, we can improve our health enormously, cure some chronic diseases and drastically increase our chances of never developing many diseases of civilization for which there is still no cure today.

Another advantage of evolutionary nutrition is effortless weight loss if you want to get rid of excess weight.

Caution: In carriers of the APOE4 gene, the risk of cardiovascular disease increases considerably when they consume saturated fatty acids.

In Europe, about 20 - 25% of people carry at least one APOE4 gene. If APOE4 carriers consume saturated fatty acids, this can, among other things, cause their LDL-P cholesterol level to rise sharply, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

More about APOE4 here: https://forever-healthy.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ENG/pages/2562556/APOE4+-+Risks+and+Risk+Management

More about cholesterol levels under "Blood Lipids" at https://forever-healthy.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ENG/pages/2556374/Functional+Testing. Among other things, it also explains that there are three different types of LDL, only one of which is dangerous, and that the total LDL level can rise when switching to a healthy diet and that this is not unhealthy as long as the level of the harmful LDL type is okay.

We try to eat practically only foods that people in prehistoric times would have recognized as food.

We eat the following foods:

  • lean meat
  • white fish, salmon and shellfish
  • salads
  • non-starchy vegetables
  • potatoes, sweet potatoes
  • white rice
  • gluten-free rolled oats
  • eggs
  • avocados
  • nuts (in moderation)
  • berries
  • fruits that are not very sweet
  • honey (in moderation)
  • stevia
  • cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil (should not be heated)
  • water

We only eat the following foods if we tolerate saturated fatty acids (i.e., if we are not APOE4 carriers):

  • dark chocolate (85%+ cocoa)
  • bacon
  • fatty meat
  • coconut oil
  • palm oil
  • butter
  • ghee

We try to avoid the following foods as much as possible:

  • sugar
  • wheat
  • grains and legumes
  • dairy products
  • soy
  • peanuts
  • brown rice
  • artificial sweeteners
  • excessive caffeine
  • industrially processed food
  • fried foods
  • sweet fruits
  • fruit juices
  • soft drinks, sugar-free soft drinks
  • tuna
  • fatty meat
  • bad oils and fats (sunflower oil, vegetable oils, corn oil)

Exercise and fitness

Probably everyone knows that exercise is important for health.

How we can train for optimal health is explained in the book "Body by Science". In short, what matters is building muscle. And how we can train well at home without having to go to the gym is described in the book "You Are Your Own Gym".

Mental well-being

It is well known today that the mind has a strong influence on our health. A positive basic attitude, meditation and stress management can make a major contribution to good health.

Positive basic attitude

A great help in achieving our goals is having a positive attitude. It helps us to feel gratitude for the things we have, to focus on our personal development and to learn and improve every day. This topic is explained well in the book "Awaken the Giant Within" by Tony Robbins.

Meditation

It is scientifically well established that meditation improves physical and mental condition. Meditation is to the mind what fitness and exercise are to the body.

Meditation can reduce depressive symptoms and worries, improve memory and attention span, increase empathy and compassion, lead to greater calm and reduce stress. It can reduce age-related effects in the brain and cognitive decline.

Sleep

Sleep is extremely important for health. Among other things, sleep has a significant influence on regeneration, detoxification, mental well-being and hormonal balance.

Over the course of evolution, bodily functions such as regeneration, digestion and detoxification have adapted to the day and night cycle. Because in modern times things like light, food intake, activity, rest and sleep often no longer happen in their natural order, our health suffers.

It is important to us not to go to bed too late and to sleep long enough, but not too long. In the evening before going to bed, we try to avoid blue light, as it can disrupt melatonin production. Ideally, we sleep in absolute darkness. The bedroom should have good air quality and a temperature of about 18 °C. During sleep, you switch back and forth several times between light sleep and deep sleep phases. Since you should not be woken up during a deep sleep phase, there are special alarm clocks that only wake us during a light sleep phase.

Detoxification

Today we can hardly manage to avoid environmental toxins completely. What is important for good health is to remove the toxins already stored in the body and to burden our body with fewer new toxins, so that, with a little help, it can quickly process and eliminate them before they can cause damage. This contributes greatly to our health in the short and long term, reverses some chronic diseases and slows down the aging process.

Food often contains many toxins or is detrimental to our health for other reasons (see Nutrition). Modern agriculture uses large amounts of fertilizers and pesticides, and factory farming uses antibiotics, hormones and poor feed such as hexane-containing, non-organic soy. All these substances then also end up, in smaller or sometimes not so small amounts, in the food produced this way. We therefore try to buy only organic and, where possible, local products from a known and trustworthy producer. Red meat should come from organically raised, free-range and grass-fed animals, poultry from organically raised and free-range animals. Fish should be wild-caught and not come from a fish farm.

Cleaning products often contain many toxins, some of them carcinogenic. We therefore try to use only organic cleaning products.

For cosmetics and personal care products, we try to use only those that are organic, completely free of additives and gluten-free.

For cookware, we avoid Teflon and aluminum.

We try to avoid plastic bottles and plastic packaging as much as possible, as they usually release unhealthy substances into their contents.

When painting interiors, we keep in mind that many paints and floor oils often still release toxins into the air months after they have been applied.

Amalgam fillings are unhealthy, as amalgam consists mainly of mercury, which is continuously released into the body. Amalgam fillings must be removed carefully, as otherwise small pieces containing mercury are swallowed, which would make the intoxication even worse.

Smoking is well known to be very harmful to health, as cigarette smoke contains numerous toxins, many of them carcinogenic. Passive smoking exposes you to the toxins almost as much as the smoker.

Dry cleaning often uses numerous unhealthy chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin when the clothes are worn.

Things in homes such as furniture and wooden floors often continuously release varying amounts of toxins into the indoor air. We try to avoid products with highly hazardous substances such as formaldehyde and to air out our rooms well on a regular basis.

Where possible, we filter the tap water we use for drinking and cooking accordingly, as it often contains substances such as chlorine, pesticides, hormones, drug residues, PCBs and heavy metals.
